There are 3 designated slots. It is possible to double up, 2 in each slot. There is also a pocket behind the slots which can hold several more.

Q: Can this be used for the smaller "family" badges?

It should work as long as it is a pin mount like a standard badge does. Then it's only a matter of the size of your "family" badge (as mentioned in the seller's response). I can say that my wife's badge mounted nice and secure, and it is an excellent wallet overall.
