It's an ON/OFF switch for your foot/fingers that's not bigger than it has to be. (I'm just using it with the Alesis SR18drum machine so I have no input to add regarding the sustain function some may need to know about) The pedal also comes with a small toggle switch in case you want to place it on a music stand or on a table for your fingers. Solid metal coated with grippy durable looking rubber completely covers both sides.Now if I can just remember to step on it!

Solid and practical. Works well.
This pedal is nice and weighty and looks and feels high quality. The polarity switch is good to have. When I press the switch, my MIDI keyboard sustains. Great stuff.
