Q: how deep is the tray?

I think about 3 inches....I can get plenty of feed in the tray.

Q: Any tricks to keep them from tipping?

We have four of them and do not see tipping as an issue. The only animal that tips ours is a squirel and there is not much one can do about that. Tipped or not, the food stays in them well and birds do not seem to mind them moving around a bit. They are much easier to refill and keep clean than a regular feeder. We love them.

Q: Can it be used to feed bluebirds mealworms?

Yes but it is a deep dish. I noticed the bluebirds like to perch on the rim making it too deep unless it is full. That uses a lot of meal worm and around here it rains a lot and the food just turns into a lump of garbage. I put nuts, fruit and seeds without millet in ours. That way all the birds including blue birds eat it. Hope this helps.
