Beautiful and serious
This is my favorite Sendak. It has some of his most beautiful illustrations. The story is about a little girl whose mother sends her into the forest to escape the war. Helped by an angel in the guise of another little girl, she meets an old man (St. Joseph) in the forest and stays with him until it's time for her to return home.Leaving and losing loved ones is one of the hardest parts of life. This isn't a lighthearted story; I wouldn't recommend it for bedtime, ye gods! This book talks about separation from that which we love the most, a feeling every child has felt deeply at some point in his/her young life. This book is good for adults, too, especially those who are grieving because the book grieves with you. There is a grand reunion at the end and whether this is how it goes in real life is something each person has to discover. All I can say that in life, it seems like the really important stuff always comes back to us, even if we think we've lost it forever.

A very sweet and sad book
Many years ago, my daughter checked this out from her school library. We read it together and I loved it. But...after she returned it I couldn't remember what it was called or who the author was so I kind of forgot about it. When she graduated, one of the things the school gave her was a printout of all the books she'd checked out while attending the school (which I thought was a really cool thing to do). That jogged my memory and I immediately jumped on here and ordered a copy. It's a very sweet book that actually contains some pretty harsh elements. I actually appreciate this kind of realism in a book even if it's for children.

Emotionally compelling... too dark for children
I loved the eerily beautiful illustrations, but this book overall was too dark for me. It's heavily saturated with Holocaust imagery (there are vines and branches that look like bones and bodies) It is a haunting interpretation of good and evil... joy and sorrow. It's emotionally compelling and incorporates a variation on loss and separation and is bound to raise questions for young children. However, in many ways this book probably speaks to adults more than to children. With that being said, it is too stark of a tale for even myself.

A heartfelt tale, read first
Read this yourself before reading to or with kids. It's an excellent story, but it's best to be prepared for the ending. A really sweet and well-illustrated book. Maurice was displaying superb artistry here.

Dear Mili makes you wonder what the worth of life is.
Like a lot of Maurice Sendak's books - you love it as a kid, and you love it as an adult for very different reasons.I guess I need Dear Mili afterall to remind me of other things than life's mandane, and to help me see our seemingly unsatisfying life in a different light.Maurice Sendak's drawings enhanced the classical beauty of the Grimm's fairytale. You can almost see the elegant images listlessly brings the words to life as the best storytellers do.

Enchanted World
Very lightly used edition of a touching Grimm fairy tale with superb drawings by Maurice Sendak. This took me back to the simplicity of childhood faith.

Beautiful and disturbing
It is a children's book for adults. I loved Sendak's illustrations of this Grimm tale, of war, aging, death and lost in the woods, but with guiding angels. It is beautiful but shivery scary, great for sharing with my now adult daughter, but not young grandchildren. I love it!

So beautiful, consider getting it in hardcover
Beautiful rendition of a somewhat grim story by Grimm. Sendak is at his creative peak here. While the story itself is heartbreaking for the adult reader, it is so well presented that the child this book was bought for is fascinated. Having read it multiple times, will probably read many more as the child grows and understands more. Bought it in paperback, will buy again in hardcover if it does not survive more wear.

Affascinante
Volume di grandi dimensioni, in brossura con copertina morbida. La storia raccontata ha diversi livelli di lettura e le illustrazioni aprono ulteriori strade interpretative. Libro per adulti e per gli estimatori di Sendak.
